Angora Goats

‚Äč‚ÄčThese elegant animals date back to early biblical times.  Mohair is written of in the times of moses between the 12th and 15th centuries B.C.  They are a medium size goat.  Does mature at between 80-100# -  bucks 125-175#.   They have a long life of about 16 years.  Being browsers and will eat as high as they can reach on their hind legs.  They do a good job clearing fields.  Their protein requirements are 12 to 16% and may need to be supplemented. Does can be bred when they reach 60#.  They are seasonal breeders usually between August & January.  They cycle every 19 to 21 days until pregnant.  Gestation is 145-150 days. Their kids are adorable they look like little stuffed animals.  They are weaned at 3-4 months.  Angora's are enjoyable farm pets.  They don't get into as much mischief or test fences like our little Nigerian Dwarf's do.  Both sexes are horned.  Disbudding is discouraged by the breed standards. The Angora's docile nature and a curving horn set.  Horns pose a less risk of injury to other goats or people.   
Their fleece "Mohair" sets them apart from all others.  The word "Mohair" is derived from Arabic "mukhaya" which means "to choose or prefer".  Who wouldn't.  Their luxurious coat grows about 1" per month, 20%-25% of their body weight.  Angora Goats are the most efficient fiber producing animal in the world.

Why is "Mohair" called the Diamond Fiber?
Mohair is one of the most versatile fibers.   It's characteristics are similar to wool.  Except it does not have the scales that can irritate the skin.  Mohair has many unique properties.  
  • Insulation capabilities;  Mohair's hollow fibers do not conduct heat.  Provides good insulation even when wet.
  • Durability:  Can be twisted without damage to the fiber.  It is the most durable animal fiber.
  • Comfort:  The smooth fibers do not irritate the skin.
  • Strength:  Stronger than steel of similar diameter.
  • Shrink resistance;  Because it's smooth fibers do not felt it shrinks much less than wool.
  • Elasticity;  It can stretch up to 30% and will spring back to shape.  Mohair garments resist wrinkling and sagging.
  • Moisture transfer;  Absorbs and releases moisture moving perspiration away from the skin.  Making it comfortable to wear in hot or cold weather.
  • Luster;  One of it's most important qualities is the ability to accept dye and display brilliant colors that resist fading.
  • Non-Flammability;  Mohair is essentially non-flammable making it a popular choice for Upholstery fabrics.
